Facebook hits 500 million users

Yesterday Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced in a blog entry that the social networking site now has over 500,000,000 users worldwide.

Zuckerberg writes:

As of this morning, 500 million people all around the world are actively using Facebook to stay connected with their friends and the people around them.

This is an important milestone for all of you who have helped spread Facebook around the world. Now a lot more people have the opportunity to stay connected with the people they care about.

For reference, if Facebook were a country, it would be the third largest in the world by population. That this milestone was reached in just over six years makes it even more impressive. Congratulations to Zuckerberg and the entire Facebook team for this enormous milestone.
